Why It Matters

The price of petrol exceeds 2 euros for the first time since September 2023, fueled by tensions on energy prices.

Petrol exceeds 2 euros per liter on the road network. The Mimit Observatory on fuel prices indicates that the average 'self service' price along the national road network rises to 2.002 euros per liter for petrol (yesterday it was 1.997) and to 2.116 euros per liter for diesel (yesterday 2.107). On the motorway network, however, the average self-service price is 2.077 euros per liter for petrol (yesterday 2.074) and 2.186 for diesel (yesterday 2.178).

With the surge recorded today, the price of petrol on the road network rises to the highest since September 2023. In fact, according to the statistics of the weekly data collected by the Ministry of the Environment, the price did not exceed 2 euros per liter (2.001 in the weekly average from 18 to 24 September 2023). However, the record of recent years was reached in March 2022, after the outbreak of the war between Russia and Ukraine, when the average prices of green fuel were around 2.2 euros per litre.

Unc: 'Petrol at 2 euros and diesel at pre-excise duty cut levels, the government must intervene immediately'

"Petrol breaks through the 2 euro mark today on the road network, while diesel fuel, both on the motorway and on the road network, has recorded the highest value since 28 July, the first day on which in theory the 14 cent cut on excise duties came into force which, after the extension on 6 August, will last until the 24th of the month, a reduction which, however, was only seen at the pumps starting from 29 July". This was stated by the president of the National Consumers Union Massimiliano Dona in a note.

"We ask the Government to intervene immediately, before the deadline of 24 August, to raise the reduction on diesel from 14 to 30 cents, so as to bring the price below 2 euros per liter on the motorway and to finally do something for those who have petrol-powered cars: a 15 cent cut is needed to return to a reasonable price of 1.9 euros per liter on the motorway", adds Dona.

Codacons: 'In July and August 1.8 billion more for a full tank of petrol and diesel'

"With petrol exceeding the psychological threshold of 2 euros per liter throughout Italy, the government no longer has any excuses and must intervene immediately with a further cut in excise duties also extended to petrol". This was stated by Codacons, commenting on the data released today by Mimit. The escalation of price lists at the pump "is having devastating effects on the pockets of Italians - reports the association - In July alone, Italians spent 782 million euros more on petrol and diesel supplies than in the same month of 2025, and the bill risks getting worse: with price lists at current levels, the overall blow for the two-month period July-August risks reaching 1.8 billion euros only due to greater spending at distributors compared to the same period last year".

"The government must urgently intervene not only to extend the cut in excise duties on diesel fuel expiring on August 25th until the first week of September, but also to extend it to petrol considering that over 17 million cars in Italy are powered by this type of fuel. In the absence of measures, the summer counter-exodus will turn into a massacre for families' wallets, and we expect an incisive measure from the executive in the next few hours that can no longer be postponed", concludes Codacons.
