BMW is preparing to launch the new BMW Maps with Driver Assistance interface, which combines the navigation system with advanced driving assistance technologies. This system, which will be active in supported cars starting from October 2026, aims to make the driving experience more transparent and visual.
The new interface brings together the vehicle's route, the lane it is in, other vehicles detected in the environment and active driving aids in a single three-dimensional image on the central screen. In this way, drivers will be able to instantly monitor how the car perceives its environment.
3D Visualization on a Single Screen
While in existing systems information about the navigation route and driving aids can be displayed on different screens, the new interface collects all of them in a common 3D scene on the central screen. On the screen, the driver will be able to see not only the route he needs to take, but also which lanes the car detects and other road users in the immediate vicinity.
The vehicle will be positioned in the actual lane it is on the screen and, in the case of multi-level roads, at the correct road level. This structure will especially assist drivers on multi-lane highways, complex intersections and during heavy traffic in city centres.
Since the navigation route and the environmental information obtained from the vehicle's sensors are displayed together, the driver will be able to monitor which route the vehicle follows and which elements in the environment the driving support systems detect on the same screen. The new look does not change the current level of automation of driver assistance systems.
BMW uses on-screen visualization to make it clearer to the driver how the available assistance systems work. The system was developed by the BMW Group and Mapbox infrastructure is used for some of the map data and mapping technology.
Integrated Operation with Highway Assistant
The new BMW Maps also works with the brand's Highway Assistant system. This system allows hands-free driving by taking over acceleration, braking and steering control at speeds up to 130 km/h on suitable highways.
When an active BMW Maps route is used, Highway Assistant can support driving from the entrance to the highway to the relevant exit. With the automatic lane change feature, the driver only needs to confirm the maneuver by looking in the mirror and the system performs the lane change under appropriate conditions.
These processes can also be followed visually on BMW's new 3D screen. While the vehicle is changing lanes or the driving assistance system is reacting to a specific traffic situation, the central display will show the elements it detects in the car's surroundings and the active assistance system.
BMW aims to further combine navigation and automation systems on the urban driving side. While there are many variables in the city environment, such as traffic lights, roundabouts, different priority rules, tram lines and junctions, the new 3D view allows these to be displayed along with the driving route.
Partially automatic urban driving guided by navigation is planned to be available in Germany from 2027. This function will also be limited to models that use BMW Operating System X and have the necessary driving assistance equipment.
The first deployment of BMW Maps with Driver Assistance will begin in October 2026. The feature will only be available on compatible vehicles equipped with Highway Assistant or Highway & City Assistant with BMW Operating System X and will vary by country, city and road.
BMW has not yet announced the detailed model list and distribution schedule for all markets.
