Brighton rejects Liverpool's £60m bid for Yankuba Minteh, signs Chema Andres for £15.5m

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler says Yankuba Minteh could still "fulfil his dream" move in the future after the club rejected Liverpool's offers in the transfer window.

The Reds had bids of £50m and £60m turned down for the winger, with Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola having wanted to bolster his attacking options.

It is understood Brighton were seeking closer to £70m for the 22‑year‑old Gambia international.

Minteh, who joined from Newcastle for £30m in 2024, plays primarily on the right and has scored 10 goals and supplied nine assists in 73 Seagulls appearances.

Speaking before Saturday's Premier League game against Leeds, Hurzeler said: "If the whole team is successful and the individual shines then Yankuba will get a lot of attention again and he can then maybe fulfil his dream in the next transfer window."

Hurzeler said Minteh is "definitely" committed to Brighton despite the failed move to Merseyside.

"He wears the Brighton colours, he wears the Brighton badge. He has been with us for two years now as part of the squad. He has achieved great things together with the boys," said the German.

"It's also about him now to commit. In the end, we always say we want to be successful as a club and then you can shine as individuals.

"That is what we have proved in the past. If we achieve things together, the attention will come to the individual players and that will be the case also this season."

Even though Minteh did not leave the club, Brighton still raised significant funds through player sales in the window, including Carlos Baleba's £70m move to Manchester United.

After generating those funds, Brighton completed a deadline move for Spanish defensive midfielder Chema Andres from Stuttgart in a deal worth £15.5m.

Andres made 41 appearances for Stuttgart last season after joining from Real Madrid in 2025.

He came through Real's youth set-up and made his La Liga debut in January 2025, before helping Stuttgart qualify for the Champions League in his one season at the club.

After securing the 21-year-old's signature, Hurzeler said he "understands" why the Spaniard has been dubbed 'baby Rodri'.

"He has this motivation of wanting to improve every day," said Hurzeler.

"He comes on the first day and wants to go outside on the pitch, he wants to have ball touches and you can really feel that he is very ambitious...

"Therefore, I can understand this comparison [with Rodri] but he has a long way to go and hopefully he can get there one day. It would be a big one for us but also for the whole football world."
