The Cardano Foundation is deploying a TypeScript kit to allow AI agents and applications to pay for services in ADA and native tokens.
AI-generated summary
The x402 protocol uses the HTTP 402 code to automate payments between customers and online services via the blockchain.
Cardano joins the automated payments race. The official x402 standard kit now includes the necessary components to accept payments in ADA or native tokens of the network. Developers can start integrating them into their applications and artificial intelligence (AI) agents.
However, the device remains at the preliminary stage. The facilitator developed by the Cardano Foundation has executed an actual transaction on the staging network, but not yet on the mainnet.

x402 Official TypeScript Kit Now Supports Cardano, ADA, and Network Native Tokens
The facilitator verifies and transmits transactions signed by users without holding their private keys
A full transaction has been executed on the preprod network, but no mainnet usage has yet been announced

Crypto: x402 transforms an HTTP code into a means of payment
Since the 1990s, the HTTP protocol has provided a status code 402, called “Payment Required”. It has been used very little until now. x402 transforms it into a payment mechanism directly integrated into exchanges between a customer and an online service.
Operation takes just a few operations. An application or software agent requests a resource, such as a dataset, a call to artificial intelligence or computing power. The server responds with the code 402, along with the price and necessary instructions. The customer then signs the payment before renewing his request with proof of payment.
An agent responsible for preparing a report could thus purchase data from time to time without creating an account, entering a bank card or taking out a monthly subscription. The service nevertheless retains the possibility of imposing other access conditions.
Coinbase launched x402 in 2025, before handing over its governance to the x402 Foundation, an organization supported by the Linux Foundation. This brings together Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Google, Amazon Web Services, Coinbase, Ripple and the Solana Foundation.
The protocol itself does not charge a commission. On the other hand, fees specific to the blockchain used continue to apply, forcing each network to offer a sufficiently low cost to make small payments relevant.
Cardano adds ADA and its native tokens to the x402 kit
The Cardano Foundation first submitted a technical specification, which was accepted in June. Its engineers then developed the necessary client-side and server-side components, as well as a facilitator responsible for verifying the regulations.
This brick does not hold any private key and does not sign transactions on behalf of the payer. It checks an already signed transaction, then transmits it to the network for settlement. The server that sells a resource therefore does not need to directly manage a Cardano node.
The system accepts ADA as well as native Cardano tokens, as a possible compatible stablecoin. These assets are managed directly by the network ledger and do not require a contract comparable to that of an ERC-20 token. The fees nevertheless remain calculated according to the size and composition of each transaction: a transfer of native tokens therefore does not necessarily cost exactly the same price as a simple transfer of ADA.
The first version concerns TypeScript. Integration with Python is planned, but it is not yet among the Cardano components available in the official kit.
AI agents open new ground for blockchains
Cardano joins a market already occupied by Solana, the XRP Ledger and several Ethereum EVM-compatible networks, including Base, Polygon and Avalanche. Each blockchain attempts to place its assets and tools where developers might build future paid services for software agents.
The main issue goes beyond technical compatibility. To charge pennies for a query, a provider needs predictable fees, rapid settlement, and a relatively stable asset. Payment in ADA technically works, but it still exposes the seller to price variations. Stablecoins can reduce this risk, provided there is sufficient liquidity on Cardano.

The Services and Payment Agency confirms a data leak via fraudulent access to a user account on August 27, 2026, detected the next day. More than 143,000 people would be affected according to FrenchBreaches, with 2023-2024 payment notices from the Île-de-France “Coup de Pouce Energie” system containing names, addresses, IBAN/BIC, beneficiary numbers and amounts paid. This is the second such leak at ASP in five months.
