Cell phone charger catches fire and burns mattress while young man slept in João Pessoa

A cell phone charger caught fire and burned part of a mattress while a 21-year-old man was sleeping, in the early hours of this Friday (4), in João Pessoa. The case gained repercussion on social media after a video published by the boy's father showed the damage caused by the flames. (See video above). Despite the scare, no one was injured.

❌ It is not recommended to keep your cell phone charging near flammable objects, such as mattresses. The device naturally heats up during charging and if it does not have adequate ventilation, it can overheat and cause life-threatening battery problems, such as explosions. According to Domires, Kaleb's father, he was sleeping with his cell phone under his pillow when he woke up, around 5 am, feeling heat near his face and realized that the room was filled with smoke and a strong smell of burning material.

"He woke up suddenly feeling the heat close to his face and the room filled with strong smells and smoke, that's when he called us", said Domires.

According to the father, the cell phone was not damaged and did not explode. The fire was concentrated in the mattress area and did not spread throughout the room.

Domires reported that his son had arrived tired from work, where he works as an intern, and ended up falling asleep without realizing that a pillow had been left over the device.

When the family realized what had happened, Kaleb had burn marks on his hand. Despite the scare, the flames were contained and no one was injured.

"We saw that the fire went deeper into the mattress and did not expand and, as a result, there was no explosion," said the father.

After the scare, Domires published a video on social media showing the burned mattress and the damage caused by the incident, to warn about the danger. The published video surpassed 1 million views and has already been shared more than 120 thousand times.

"Avoid leaving your cell phone charging next to you while you sleep. A fire almost didn't happen. Be very careful," he warned.
