Giulio Regeni case: tomorrow the sentence of the Court of Assizes for the four Egyptian 007s

Tomorrow the Giulio Regeni case reaches its verdict. In Rome, the first Court of Assizes is called to rule on the four men of the Egyptian secret services who were accused in the case of the young Friulian researcher who disappeared on 5 January 2016 and was found dead on the following 6 February on the motorway connecting Cairo with Alexandria. 3,890 days will have passed since the discovery of his body, marked by torture.

For the Rome Prosecutor's Office, behind the kidnapping and killing of Regeni there was not the action of common criminals, but that of men inserted into the Egyptian state apparatus. It is on this reconstruction that the trial developed and on which the judges will now have to decide.

The indictment concluded on June 23. The deputy prosecutor Sergio Colaiocco requested a life sentence for Magdi Ibrahim Abdelal Sharif, indicated as the one who physically killed Regeni.

For Athar Kamel Mohamed Ibrahim, Uhsam Helmi and Tareq Sabyr the request is 17 years and six months of imprisonment for each.

According to the Prosecutor's Office, the responsibilities alleged against the defendants do not derive from an emotional reading of the story, but from a set of documents, testimonies, technical-scientific investigations and feedback acquired and verified during the trial.
