CBV restricts female category to athletes of female biological sex

The Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (CBV) announced this Friday (14) that only female athletes will be able to participate in competitions organized by the entity. The new eligibility policy for athletes in the female category was published late this afternoon on the CBV website. According to the entity, the new criteria aim to comply with the rules of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB).

Verification will be done by testing and screening the SRY gene. Normally the examination is carried out through a blood test or mouth swab.

"With the change in international parameters and institutional responsibility, the CBV sought to maintain alignment between the rules that govern national competitions with those currently in force for international competitions. The CBV's decision is in line with the IOC and leaves our championships on par with international competitions.", stated Radamés Lattari, president of the CBV, on the entity's website.

The new eligibility policy comes into force in the Superliga A and B competitions (season 26/27), Supercopa 2026, Copa Brasil 2027, Circuito Brasileiro de Vôlei de Praia 2027 (adult), CBVP Challenger 2027 and in the respective subsequent editions during the policy's validity.
