Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the BRICS Summit in New Delhi and met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines. The Indian press release stated that the two sides reiterated that the two countries should view bilateral relations from a strategic and long-term perspective, and differences should not turn into disputes.

The Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a statement that Narendra Modi and Xi Jinping are happy to see the steady progress in India-China bilateral relations since their meeting in Tianjin in August last year. Both sides reiterated that the two countries should view bilateral relations from a strategic and long-term perspective; differences should not turn into disputes.

The Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a statement that Modi emphasized that both sides must follow the three principles of mutual respect, mutual understanding, and mutual benefit.

Modi also mentioned that peace and tranquility in border areas remain an important foundation for the continued development of bilateral relations.

The leaders of the two countries said they would be committed to resolving the border issue in a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable manner from the overall political perspective of bilateral relations and the long-term interests of the two peoples.

Modi and Xi Jinping also paid attention to the progress of people-to-people exchanges between India and China, and emphasized the need to further promote cultural exchanges, business exchanges and personnel flows between the two sides.

In terms of economic and trade relations, the two emphasized the need to address issues of mutual concern, including structural trade imbalances and supply chain issues, and to promote substantial and predictable market access.

The statement from the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs finally mentioned that the leaders of both countries believe that the two sides must continue to expand consensus on regional and global issues to jointly respond to many challenges.
