The identity of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Cemil Tugay, who continued his duty independently after resigning from CHP, is on the agenda of many people on social media. It is wondered whether Cemil Tugay, who continued his duty as mayor of Izmir independently after leaving CHP on June 18, will join the AK Party.

Cemil Tugay was born in Van in 1967. He graduated from İzmir İnönü High School and Ege University Faculty of Medicine in 1989. He is married and has three children; He speaks English and French.

After working as a General Practitioner in 2000, he became a Plastic Surgeon. He worked as a research physician at Cleveland Clinic in the USA. He worked as a specialist doctor in Karşıyaka State Hospital, Çiğli City Hospital and his own practice.

He served as the chairman of the board of directors and branches of the Izmir Medical Chamber, Turkish Medical Association (TTB) and Plastic Surgery Associations. He also took part in the Karşıyaka City Council.

He became a member of CHP in 2010 and served as a commission member, R&D chairman and district vice chairman in provincial/district administrations. He served as Mayor of Karşıyaka between 2019-2024. He resigned from CHP on June 18, 2026 and continued his duty as Independent Mayor.
