The championship phase is underway: from September 2026 to the end of January 2027, the 36 teams will each play eight matches, four at home and four away, against eight different opponents. In the end, the ranking is unique: the top eight clubs qualify directly for the round of 16, those from ninth to 24th position go to the playoffs, from 25th position onwards they are eliminated (without repechages in other competitions). There are 36 teams that - from September to the end of January - compete in the single group of the 2026/2027 Champions League. Four Italian teams are in the running: Inter, Napoli, Roma and Como (THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE). This 72nd edition also includes the single group, introduced a few years ago: in the so-called "championship phase" the clubs each play eight matches, four at home and four away, against eight different opponents. The ranking is unique: in the end, after the eighth and final day, the top eight teams qualify directly for the round of 16, those from ninth to 24th position have to face the playoffs, while those placed from 25th position onwards are eliminated (without repechages in other competitions).

The ranking after the first day

From position 1 to 8 you can access the eighths directly. From position 9 to 24 you enter the playoffs. From position 25 to 36 you are eliminated.

What happens if in the end we get equal points? The regulation

In the event that some teams finish the championship phase on equal points, UEFA has established some criteria to determine the final ranking of the single group. Here they are, in order:

Greater goal difference in the championship phase

Highest number of goals scored in the championship phase

Highest number of away goals scored in the league stage

Most wins in the championship phase

Highest number of away wins in the championship phase

Greater number of points obtained collectively by opponents in the championship phase

Collective goal difference higher than opponents in the championship phase

Highest number of goals scored collectively by opponents in the championship phase

Lowest disciplinary score based on only yellow and red cards received by players and team staff in all matches in the championship phase (red card = 3 points, yellow card = 1 point, sending off for two yellow cards in one match = 3 points)
