Rain with winds up to 70 km/h knocks down containers and trees in Rio Claro (SP)

Rain accompanied by strong winds overturned containers that were in the yard of a company on Rodovia Fausto Santomauro (SP-127), in the Jardim Novo 1 neighborhood, in Rio Claro (SP), this Thursday (10).

Images circulating on social media show the toppled containers (Watch above). The storm also knocked down several trees and even a truck overturned.

In a statement, the city hall reported that winds of up to 70 km/h hit the city in the early afternoon of this Thursday. Nobody was injured.

As reported by EPTV, a TV Globo affiliate, the force of the gusts displaced the containers, which hit the electrical wiring, leaving the region without power supply. Teams from the Neonergia Elektro concessionaire are working to restore supply.

The containers were lined up next to the sidewalk and the wind caused those that were taller to fall onto the street.

According to the city hall, the wind caused material damage and the fall of several trees. Until mid-afternoon, the accumulated rainfall was 35 mm.

With the reduction in the intensity of the rain, teams from the Civil Defense, Fire Department, Public Services Department, Traffic Department, Municipal Civil Guard and the electricity concessionaire began work to clear public roads, in addition to other repairs.

The city hall did not disclose the number of trees that fell, but said that some caused the closure of public roads.

A wall also fell and a truck overturned due to the force of the wind. The Civil Defense of Rio Claro reported that more heavy rain is expected in the coming days.

Alerts

The State Civil Defense reported that, throughout this Thursday, 10 alerts were issued by Cell Broadcast for different regions of the State, including Rio Claro, Pirassununga, Américo Brasiliense and Mococa.

52 SMS alerts were also sent, expanding preventive communication with the population in light of the unstable conditions expected for the State.

Guidelines for the population

During storms, Civil Defense recommends that the population follow official warnings and avoid unnecessary travel.

In cases of strong winds, the recommendation is to stay indoors and in the most central rooms of the home, such as bathrooms and hallways, away from windows and glass doors, as long as there is no risk of flooding.

It is also important to keep away from trees, poles, metal structures, fragile coverings and other elements that could be damaged or moved by the wind.

During heavy rain, the advice is not to cross flooded streets, bridges or watercourses. In case of hail, look for a covered and protected place. Residents of hillside areas should pay attention to signs of instability, such as cracks and leaning trees or poles.
