Hailstorm hits Mongaguá and scares residents on the coast of São Paulo

Images sent by residents of both cities recorded the fall of hail amid the rain, in addition to the noise generated by the impact of the ice with the floor (watch above). In a statement, Mongaguá City Hall stated that the phenomenon hit the neighborhoods of Florida Mirim, Itaguaí and Plataforma between 5:45 am and 7:32 am.

💦 According to Climatempo, hail develops inside clouds of great vertical extent, which have a significant part with temperatures below zero, an essential condition for the formation of ice stones, called cumulonimbus.

Juliana Santos, resident of the Itaguaí neighborhood, in Mongaguá, has a son diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and, therefore, ran to drown out the noise while the child slept.

"The last time I saw a hailstorm I was a child, I was very scared because my house was made of tiles and I had a five-year-old autistic child, who thank God was sleeping. I wrapped him in the blanket to muffle the sound, but it was desperate", said Juliana.

Resident Ivania Lisboa stated that she had never seen hail in the city and was scared by the noise. She said that, together with family members, she had to run to the garage and cover the car to avoid damage.

"We got a little scared and ran outside, because the car was in the garage. [...] We had never seen ice rain here in Mongaguá. I recorded the bucket, a lot of ice had fallen in the yard. It was pretty scary, but it was pretty cool too", reported Ivania.

g1 contacted Itanhaém City Hall, looking for more information about the case, but did not receive a response until the last update of this report.

Civil Defense advises the population not to cross flooded or flooded streets and to stay away from trees and fragile metal structures. On the coast of São Paulo, it is recommended to avoid nautical activities, as there are conditions for sea waves throughout the weekend.

Residents of risk areas should remain alert to signs that precede landslides, such as cracks in walls, doors and windows jamming, and leaning posts and trees.
