The candidate for the Senate for Ceará Cid Gomes (PSB) was interviewed this Monday morning (31) at Bom Dia Ceará and presented proposals for areas such as public security and the economy.
Cid said he was in favor of banning betting in Brazil and defended the use of the Federal Police to combat criminal factions in the states. The candidate was also in favor of ending the 6X1 scale, Proposed Amendment to the Constitution (PEC) currently being processed in the Federal Senate.
"My thoughts are to ban [bets]. It has caused terrible harm, it has affected the family budget. It is an illusion that is created in people. Today I am in favor of banning the use of this thing that is harmful to the economy and the health of families", pointed out the candidate.
Cid Gomes defended greater action by the Federal Government in combating organized crime in Brazilian states. This week, the Public Security PEC will be voted on in the Senate CCJ before reaching the plenary.
If approved, the PEC allows President Lula to create the Ministry of Public Security. This means that the Union will be able to act in the fight against factions, through the Federal Police, among other resources. For the Cid candidate, this is the "only way":
"No Brazilian state, alone, in isolation, will be able to solve the problem of criminal organizations that are present in all states. If you carry out an operation in São Luís do Curu, the leader of the faction there flees to Rio de Janeiro. If you carry out an operation in Forquilha, the leader of the faction there flees to Rio de Janeiro", commented the candidate.
According to Cid, in addition to the PF's field work, it is essential to reinforce police intelligence work, especially to monitor the factions' financial movements, identifying other illicit activities.
"The Senate, this week now, will consider a matter that will allow the Union to do this. And President Lula made a commitment that, once the matter is approved, he will immediately create an Exclusive Ministry for Public Security and create a program that is centered on combating criminal factions in Brazil and, obviously, present in Ceará."

Born in Sobral, Cid Ferreira Gomes is a civil engineer and had his first political activities at the course's Academic Center, at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC). He was elected as a state deputy for two terms. From 1997 to 2004, he served as mayor of Sobral. He was then elected governor of Ceará for two terms, between 2007 and 2014. In 2015, he was Minister of Education in the government of Dilma Rousseff.
In the 2018 elections, Cid was elected to the position of senator of Ceará, with a term of eight years. While Cid is running for re-election in the Senate, his brother, Ciro Gomes, is trying to return to the position of governor of Ceará in an opposition political group. The feud between the brothers became public in 2022, when the 16-year alliance between PT and PDT in Ceará broke down. Cid is running for the Senate on the Elmano de Freitas (PT) ticket.
The Federal Senate is made up of 81 parliamentarians. Each state has three representatives. Two of the three vacancies in Ceará will be renewed this year. The two senators elected in October will spend the next eight years defending the state's interests in Brasília and helping to decide important issues for the entire country. Senators participate in the creation and approval of laws and discuss topics that are part of Brazilians' routine, such as security, health, education, employment.
They also analyze changes to the Constitution and vote on the appointment of important authorities, such as ministers of the Federal Supreme Court, ambassadors and the management of the Central Bank. Furthermore, they play a decisive role in issues that can change the country's direction, such as judging the President of the Republic in cases of criminal offenses and approving financial operations by the federal government, states and municipalities.
