Daniil Medvedev was disqualified by throwing a ball into the audience at the China Open

Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev, who came onto the court in the China Open semi-final match, was disqualified from the tournament after the ball he threw towards the stands in anger hit the audience.

Facing Serbian player Novak Djokovic for the final, Medvedev was trailing 7-5 and 5-3 in the sets and angrily sent the ball bouncing off the board at the edge of the court towards the stands.

MEDVEDEV WAS DISQUALIFIED

Referee Muhammed Lahyani disqualified the Russian athlete after the ball hit the face of a spectator following the match.

In his statement after the match, Medvedev said, "First of all, I would like to apologize to the audience. I am trying to contact him if he wants too. I hope I can apologize in person and see how he feels. I just hope he is well. That is the most important thing. I really only care about him right now."

After this decision, Djokovic reached the final of the China Open for the 7th time in his career.
