Coleman Wong Upsets Top Seed Jiri Lehecka at ATP 250 Mifel Open

Coleman Wong Chak-lam pulled off a major upset on Thursday, coming from behind to eliminate the top seed and reach the quarter-finals of the ATP 250 Mifel Open in Los Cabos, Mexico.

Hong Kong’s top-ranked player, currently ranked world No 108, rallied from a set down to beat Czech world No 12 Jiri Lehecka 2-1 in the last 16.

After holding serve in his opening game, Wong struggled against a dominant Lehecka, dropping the first set 6-1 after being broken twice. In the second set, both players held firm in a tight contest before Wong broke in the eighth game to level the match at 6-3.

Carrying that momentum into the decider, Wong secured an early break in the third set and maintained his advantage to complete the turnaround, covering his face with his hands and shouting in excitement after sealing the win with an ace.

“It’s tough. It’s like … the whole match was so close,” Wong said after the match, admitting he had not expected to pull off the comeback.

“I just tried to hang in there and keep believing and keep trusting myself, because … I haven’t played that much in all these big tournaments. So, I’m really happy. I really enjoy just playing on a big court, it means a lot.”
