Collision between two trains near Toledo: the regional government reports a “minimum of 30 deaths”

Two trains collided on Wednesday, October 28, about 100 km south of Madrid, Spain, on the high-speed line between Los Yébenes and Urda. According to information from the government of Castile-La Mancha reported by the Spanish newspaper El Pais, at least "30 deaths" are, for the moment, to be deplored. According to the Spanish emergency services contacted by AFP, the collision took place "at 8:54 a.m." between "two trains, one from [the private operator] Yrio and the other from [the national company] Renfe". • The regional government has activated its emergency plan. The autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha has activated Platecam, its territorial emergency plan, raised to situation 2, corresponding to requests for regional or even national aid.

• The Spanish Prime Minister “dismayed”. Pedro Sanchez said Wednesday he was “dismayed” by the “serious” collision between the two trains. “The emergency services are intervening on the ground to take care of those affected,” he wrote on X, showing his “support” for the victims and their families.

• Traffic interrupted. The railway company Renfe clarified on X that traffic was interrupted between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia and highlighted the possibility of "changing or canceling tickets for all affected trains free of charge".
