Consumption is monitored by Abras based on data deflated by the IPCA. The job market presents records for employment and real income.
Consumption in Brazilian Homes registered an increase of 2.70% from January to September, according to a report by the Brazilian Supermarket Association (Abras), which considers the percentage practically stable in relation to the 2.71% accumulated until August.
In September there was an increase of 0.59% compared to the same month in 2025.
In the monthly comparison, there was a drop of 1.46%, after two months of growth, being 3.01% in July and 2.21% in August. The survey indicates that falls were also recorded in September 2024 (-1.30%) and 2025 (-0.94%).
The data was deflated by the Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) calculated by IBGE and includes the performance of all supermarket formats, from small ones, neighborhood ones, to large ones.
Trajectory
According to the vice-president of Abras, Marcio Milan, consumption maintains a positive trajectory throughout the year, even in a scenario in which families need to reconcile household supplies with other budget commitments. “The result accumulated until September shows the continuity of this movement”, he analyzes.
Milan highlighted that labor market indicators remain favorable, positive factors for consumption, with an unemployment rate of 5.3% in the quarter ended in August and an employed population of 103.5 million people, the largest number in the historical series.
“The usual average real income from all jobs reached R$3,777, with growth of 3.7% compared to the same period in 2025. The usual real income mass reached R$385.6 billion, also a record for the series, with an increase of 4.8% in the annual comparison, equivalent to R$17.5 billion more”, he said.
Milan cited Bolsa Família, which allocated R$13.04 billion to around 19.3 million families in September, and the Federal Justice Council, which released R$3.22 billion to the Federal Regional Courts for the payment of Small Value Requests (RPVs), involving more than 278 thousand beneficiaries, in addition to the payment of 521.9 thousand Income Tax refunds.
Re-election
Milan stated that one of the most relevant achievements of the current government was the tax exemption for basic food products, with a wider range of items, including proteins (meat, chicken, fish), which should help maintain consumption.
"On the other hand, there is concern regarding the new tax rates that will be announced at the beginning of the new administration, so that this does not burden the rest of the products that make up the food and consumption basket. We are also concerned about family debt and the government's measures in relation to this."
The vice-president of Abras highlighted the need to maintain the ban on betting, which helped to increase consumption. According to data released this week by the entity, food sales increased in the weeks following the measure: 6.5% from 10/5 to 11/2026, and 6.3% from 10/12 to 18/2026, both compared to the same period last year.
