On Saturday morning, engineers and workers started clearing away mud and debris using excavators and heavy earth-moving machinery in an effort to reopen the route to a border checkpoint in Gyirong, Tibet.

Many of the frontline workers involved had taken part in another rescue operation in July last year, when the region was hit by a mudslide that washed away a bridge, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

On Friday night, an advance team of eight firefighters was forced to pull back to a safe zone because of fears the lake would burst its banks, but the water level remained stable on Saturday.

The lake, which CCTV said was around 100,000 square metres (1 million sq ft), equivalent to 14 standard football pitches, is being monitored by radars and drones.

Open Questions

  • When will the route fully reopen?
  • What is the current stability status of the lake?
