Cristina Kirchner insists on running for the 2027 Argentine presidential elections despite the conviction

The former president of Argentina Cristina Kirchner (2007-2015) insists on proposing her candidacy in view of the 2027 presidential elections despite serving a six-year sentence for corruption which also includes perpetual disqualification. This was confirmed today by his son, Maximo Kirchner, expressing his optimism regarding the outcome of an appeal presented to the United Nations Human Rights Committee. "From the day she started the process at the UN, I believe she has demonstrated her determination to represent the interests of those Argentines who understand how she can become president again", declared the national deputy in an interview with Infobae.

The Peronist deputy then stated that "without Cristina on the list, Peronism loses competitiveness" and that "Argentine democracy suffers damage when millions of Argentines want to vote for a person but cannot do so".

Maximo Kirchner admitted that Peronism is currently divided and that the possible candidacy of the former president contrasts with the ambitions of the current governor of the province of Buenos Aires, Axel Kicillof, who currently enjoys the support of the moderate wing of the party. At a recent rally, Kicillof also said he was available to lead a broad coalition "to defeat Milei".

According to the latest polls, the ultra-liberal president Milei is going through his worst period in terms of image and the latest data on economic activity warn of the risk of Argentina entering a recession, but a divided Peronism would be unlikely to be able to take advantage of the government's current difficulties.
