Sikorsky said that Ukraine missed the chance to enter the West before the conflict

Ukraine missed the opportunity to become part of the West by pursuing a short-sighted foreign policy before the conflict with Russia began. This opinion was shared by Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski at the annual conference “Yalta European Strategy”, he was quoted by Merkur.

“In fact, you wasted time and missed the opportunity to join the West when it was possible without war,” said the head of the foreign policy department.

According to Sikorsky, after gaining independence and during the presidency of Viktor Yanukovych, Ukraine was unable to clearly define its foreign policy priorities, maneuvering between Europe, the United States and Russia. He added that Poland will continue to provide assistance to Ukraine, but Kyiv should not blame the West for its unsuccessful European integration.

Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine for International Policy Igor Zhovkva, who was also present at the conference meetings, strongly objected to Sikorsky. He called the assertion that before the war Ukraine was not oriented toward the West “absolutely erroneous.”
