Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi departs for New York, USA to attend the United Nations General Assembly

Late at night on the 21st, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi departed from Haneda Airport on a government plane bound for New York, USA, to attend the United Nations General Assembly. Delivering his first general debate speech at the General Assembly, he explained that he was formulating an economic and energy cooperation plan for the Gulf countries, taking into account the situation in the Middle East. Demonstrate a stance of contributing to stabilizing the world's energy supply. He hopes to meet with US President Trump and review their understanding of China ahead of the US-China summit.

Prior to his departure, the Prime Minister spoke to reporters at the Prime Minister's official residence, and in his speech emphasized that ``I would like to express Japan's determination to demonstrate leadership'' in strengthening energy and other supply networks and responding to technological innovations such as artificial intelligence (AI).

The formulation of a cooperation plan for the Gulf countries was communicated to both countries in late August when Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi visited Saudi Arabia and Oman.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of Japan's membership in the United Nations. In his speech on the 22nd local time, the prime minister expressed his continued support for multilateralism centered on the United Nations. He will explain Japan's position on the situation in Asia, the Middle East, Ukraine, etc., and convey its determination to tackle issues such as UN Security Council reform, disarmament and non-proliferation, and global warming countermeasures.

The Japan-U.S. summit meeting is scheduled to take place on the 22nd local time. Ahead of the U.S.-China summit meeting on the 24th, the prime minister intends to encourage Trump not to make a deal with China over Japan's head. The United States' sanctions against Tomoko Akane, director of the International Criminal Court (ICC), and Japan's fiscal and monetary policies may also be on the agenda.

The prime minister will also meet with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and others before returning to Japan on the 24th.
