With Rep. Andy Barr stepping aside to run for retiring Sen. Mitch McConnellâs seat, Kentuckyâs 6th District has opened up. Barr is among 36 Republican House members relinquishing their seats this cycle, relative to 23 Democrats.
Navy veteran and former federal prosecutor Zach Dembo secured the Democratic nomination. He competes against Republican Ralph Alvarado, a physician and ex-state senator backed by Trump in the primary.
The central Kentucky seat has been reliably Republican since Barr unseated incumbent Democratic Rep. Ben Chandler in 2012, with the National Republican Congressional Committee noting an edge in voter registration.

Fayette County, the districtâs largest locality including Lexington, backed Democrats by over 40 percentage points then. Yet Barr secured a comfortable reelection a year later as Trump won Kentucky.
Republican Rep. Mark Amodei is stepping down after 15 years representing northern Nevadaâs high desert 2nd District. However, rancher and former state Sen. James Settelmeyer, who was the retiring lawmakerâs preferred candidate, failed to secure the party nomination to succeed him.
Primary voters instead selected retired Air Force Lt. Col. and small business owner David Flippo, who won Trump's endorsement even after Amodei described the presidentâs selection as "a mistake."
Flippo now faces Teresa Benitez-Thompson, a social worker, former majority leader of the Nevada legislature, and former Miss America contestant who stepped down from her seat in 2024 because of term limits.
