29 years in prison for the defendant who killed Merve Nur Yararlık in a cafe in Diyarbakır

The incident took place on March 8, 2025, at the cafe at the entrance of a shopping mall on Şanlıurfa highway. Bülent Arpacı came to the cafe and opened fire with a gun from outside. The bullet from the gun hit the neck of Merve Nur Yararlık, who was sitting in the cafe. In the incident captured on the security camera, S.K. The man named was also injured. Upon notice, health and police teams were dispatched to the address. Upon check-up by the medical team, it was determined that Yararlık had died, S.K. He was treated in the hospital where he was taken after his first aid. Merve Nur Yararlık's body was buried in Yeniköy Asri Cemetery after the autopsy at the Forensic Medicine Institute.

Murder suspect Bülent Arpacı was caught by the teams of the Public Order Branch Directorate Homicide Bureau in an operation in the Pirinçlik area. Arpacı, who was referred to the courthouse after his procedures, was arrested in the courthouse.

The indictment prepared by the Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor's Office against the detained defendant Bülent Arpacı was accepted by the 3rd High Criminal Court. In the indictment, aggravated life imprisonment and a prison sentence of 15 to 24 years were requested for the detained defendant Bülent Arpacı for the crimes of 'deliberate murder', 'attempted intentional murder' and 'purchasing, carrying or possessing an unlicensed firearm and bullets'. In the indictment, it was stated that with the petition submitted to the file on May 20, Merve Nur Yararlık's father, Osman Yararlık, gave up his complaint because her death occurred accidentally, and her mother stated that she was not a complainant. At the 4th hearing, father Osman Yararlık stated that he thought the incident was not an accident and filed a complaint against the defendant.

Merve Nur's family, detained defendant Bülent Arpacı, party lawyers and the lawyer of the Ministry of Family and Social Services attended the decision hearing of the case held at Diyarbakır 3rd High Criminal Court. At the hearing, the defendant Bülent Arpacı claimed in his defense that he repeated his previous statements, that he knew S.K. and shot at him, and that he did not know Merve Nur, and requested a decision for his release. Merve Nur's mother and father demanded that the defendant be punished.

Following the defenses, the court panel sentenced the defendant to 18 years in prison for the crime of 'killing with possible intent' against Mervenur Yararlık, 9 years in prison for the crime of 'attempted intentional murder' against S.K., and 2 years in prison and a judicial fine of 10 thousand TL for the crime of 'purchasing, carrying or possessing an unlicensed firearm and bullets'. Arpacı was sentenced to a total of 29 years in prison for 3 separate crimes.
