Ceylan Ağaç, a second-year student at the Department of Business Administration at Bursa Uludağ University, was seriously injured when she fell from the window on the 6th floor after feeling dizzy due to a migraine attack in Kars, where she went to visit her family on May 21. Ağaç, who had two fractures in his vertebrae, underwent surgery at Kars Harakani State Hospital. Doctors said that Ceylan Ağaç could not walk due to her spinal cord injury. Ağaç, who was referred to Ankara Etlik City Hospital Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Hospital in June, was taken to the rehabilitation program at the Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Clinic. In Ağaç's treatment program, which started about 3 months ago, robotic walking system, reduced gravity treadmill, aquatic exercises and individual therapy practices accompanied by a physiotherapist were carried out together. The tree made great progress during the treatment process, which started with no movement in its legs, and started to stand up and walk again.
'DOCTORS SAID HE CANNOT WALK, HE IS PARALYZED'
Ceylan Ağaç, who is undergoing treatment, explained that the incident took place when she went from Bursa to Kars to visit her family and said, "I had a migraine, I was nauseous. I opened the window. Then I looked at the ground and fell. I was conscious when I fell. After the surgery, the doctors in the intensive care unit said 'he cannot walk, he is paralyzed', they said 'there is a 1 percent chance'. I suffered a lot during that process. Physical therapy did not help. Then, on June 13, he took a helicopter ambulance to Ankara. I came. I was in a lot of pain, but I always said, 'Ceylan, you will be fine in Ankara.' We arrived here by helicopter in 1.5 hours. When I first came, no one could touch me, I was in so much pain. I started physical therapy 3 weeks after arriving. But I got over it little by little, one by one, thanks to the medications. Sometimes I say, 'I was in a very bad mood on the first day.' Now, thanks to my physiotherapist Mr. Adil, my doctors' treatment and my determination, I survived and walked. "I feel very good right now," he said.
'I STARTED WALKING STEP BY STAGE'
Ceylan Ağaç explained that she gradually started sitting on the bed, then sitting on a chair and then walking with support, and said, "I didn't believe that I could walk. I was very confident in myself. At first I let myself go, but then I said 'I will do it'. The doctors here gave me a lot of confidence. They always said 'You can do it, you are young'. Here, we do resistance exercises to strengthen my muscles, muscles are stimulated, we do balance movements. We do pool and computer exercises. Alone in the pool." "I can walk. Then, I started walking with support. It's such a great feeling. I couldn't lift my head up at all. I'm walking now. I've increased the 1 percent to 99 percent. The process is going very slowly, but I hope I will complete that 1 percent."
'THERE WAS NO MOVEMENT IN HIS FEET AND LEGS'
Assoc. Prof. from the Spinal Cord Injury Clinic at Ankara Etlik City Hospital Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Hospital. Dr. Zeynep Tuba Bahtiyarca explained that Ceylan Ağaç had a traumatic spinal cord injury due to two spinal fractures in her waist and said, "When Ceylan first came to our clinic, there was no active movement in her feet and legs. But she had partial protection in her legs and sensations. First, we arranged her medical treatments for pain control. Then, after the patient's pain was relieved, after the patient's pain was relieved, various electrical stimulations, cycling applications were performed during the rehabilitation process, and in the meantime, she was standing again." "We used robotic rehabilitation to remind him of stopping, weight transfer and walking. Afterwards, the patient's leg was lifted on the parallel bar, and in the following period, he walked with a walker and now with a cane," he said. Assoc. Dr. Bahtiyarca noted that they plan to discharge the patient after a 2-3 week rehabilitation period.
'WE WILL BE DISCHARGED FULLY INDEPENDENT'
Physiotherapist Adil Songur stated that they try to increase the independence of patients with spinal cord injuries in the clinic and stated that they enabled Ceylan Ağaç to walk with robotic exercises and their aim is to discharge her fully independent.
