US President Trump and others sign new Greenland defense agreement

On the 22nd, U.S. President Trump, Prime Minister Frederiksen of Denmark, and Prime Minister Nielsen of the autonomous government of Greenland signed a new agreement for the defense of Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, in New York City. It grants the United States the right to carry out a wide range of military activities, including the establishment of two new bases, and imposes restrictions on China and Russia's economic expansion.

Prior to signing the bill, Trump announced in his general debate speech at the United Nations General Assembly that he would "build two large-scale military bases." Mr. Frederiksen emphasized the significance, saying, ``We are trying to strengthen our common security.'' Nielsen also said, ``America's safety is our security.''

Mr. Trump has publicly stated that he aims to claim Greenland, but the new agreement reaffirms Denmark's sovereignty by stipulating that it recognizes the "territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark" and the "right of self-determination" of Greenland residents. The involvement of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will also be strengthened.
