Mokpo National University, “immediately considering an appeal” over the suspension of selection of medical school candidates

(Mokpo = Yonhap News) Reporter Hyeong Min-woo = Mokpo National University announced on the 4th that it would “immediately review follow-up procedures, including an appeal,” after the court dismissed its application to suspend the enforcement of the selection and recommendation of national medical school candidate universities.

Mokpo University issued a press release that day, saying, “We respect the court’s decision and take the court’s judgment seriously.”

Mokpo University claimed, “This decision did not determine the substantive legality of the candidate university evaluation process,” and added, “The content of the site secured in the Suncheon National University promotion plan, the actual title (legal right to use another person’s land), whether the site was specified, and whether the pre-established point deduction criteria were applied were not included in the judgment.”

In addition, "the court ruled that the final decision on the allocation of new medical schools and admission quota lies with the Minister of Education," he said. "The Minister of Education is not bound by the recommendation of Jeollanam-do Gwangju Metropolitan City and can independently review the implementation plan. If illegality in the recommendation process or unfairness in the review is confirmed, he can take follow-up measures, such as requesting supplementation."

Accordingly, Mokpo University plans to request the Ministry of Education to independently and objectively verify the fairness of the evaluation of candidate universities and the securing of land for Suncheon University and submit related data and opinions.

In addition, we plan to review the decision, consider follow-up legal procedures, such as an immediate appeal, and jointly respond to the ongoing lawsuit on the merits with the Faculty Council.

Mokpo National University said, “The 36-year goal of resolving the medical gap in the southwestern region of Jeollanam-do and establishing a regionally complete medical system cannot be shaken,” and said, “We will continue our efforts to establish a medical school and university hospital.”

Jeonnam Gwangju Metropolitan City commissioned the Jeonnam Research Institute to select Suncheon National University as a national medical school candidate university on August 30, but Mokpo National University filed a lawsuit in court, claiming that the review was conducted unfairly.

On the 2nd, the 1st Administrative Division of the Gwangju District Court (Chief Judge Kim Jeong-jung) dismissed Mokpo University's application for 'suspension of the selection and recommendation of new candidate universities for the National Medical University' filed against the city of Unified City.
