Tourists in Bali warned of dangerous marine life

Tourists in Bali are faced with dangerous marine life, including poisonous jellyfish, octopuses and snakes.

In the waters of the island, box jellyfish and Portuguese man-of-war are periodically found - one of the most dangerous stinging marine organisms in the world.

Other potentially dangerous inhabitants include blue-ringed octopus, stonefish and sea snakes.

JAKARTA, June 3 – RIA Novosti. Tourists in Bali are in danger of dangerous marine life, including deadly poisonous jellyfish, octopuses and snakes, representatives of environmental organizations on the island told RIA Novosti.

“Most tourists are afraid of sharks, but in reality, much more often, problems are caused by completely different creatures - poisonous jellyfish, sea snakes, lionfish, stone fish and some types of octopuses. At the same time, serious incidents remain rare if you follow basic safety rules,” Coral Triangle Center, one of Bali’s environmental organizations, told RIA Novosti.

According to environmentalists, box jellyfish and Portuguese man-of-war, some of the most dangerous stinging marine organisms in the world, are periodically found in the island's waters. Their long tentacles can retain the ability to sting even after the animal has washed ashore.

Experts call the blue-ringed octopus another threat.

“Despite the size of a golf ball, this inhabitant of tropical waters is considered one of the most poisonous animals on the planet. Its bright blue rings appear when there is danger and serve as a warning,” the organization noted.
