Retired police officer Ekrem Akyol committed suicide by shooting martyred police officer Mehmet Ali Topatan during traffic control.

ISTANBUL Retired police officer Ekrem Akyol, who was found to be a pirate taxi driver during the traffic inspection on the street at around 22.50 on the evening of September 4 in Esenyurt, had an argument with the traffic police who fined him. When he learned that his vehicle would be banned from traffic and tied up, Akyol opened fire on the police officers who had their backs turned with the gun he pulled from his waist, and seriously injured traffic police officer Mehmet Ali Topatan by shooting him in the back. Then he shot himself in the head with the same gun and committed suicide. Both were taken to hospital with serious injuries. Topatan, who was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, could not be saved despite all the interventions made last night and was martyred. Akyol, who committed suicide after shooting Topatan in the back, also lost his life. It was learned that Akyol, a retired chief police officer, retired from police officership in 2026.

It was learned that martyr police officer Topatan was also married and had twin daughters named Zehra and Zeynep. A ceremony was held for Martyr Topatan at the Vatan Campus of the Istanbul Police Department. To the ceremony; Istanbul Governor Davut Gül, Istanbul Police Chief Selami Yıldız and Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Kübra Güran Yiğitbaşı attended. After a moment of silence, a prayer was said. After the ceremony, the body of the martyred police officer, wrapped in the Turkish flag, was carried to the hearse on the shoulders of his colleagues.
