CDU MP Florian Est called on Chancellor Friedrich Merz to carry out large-scale economic reforms

Member of the Bundestag (German Parliament) from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Florian Est, doubted the ability of German Chancellor and leader of the CDU/CSU bloc Friedrich Merz to carry out large-scale economic reforms in Germany and stop the decline in the rating of conservatives against the backdrop of the growing popularity of the opposition party Alternative for Germany.

Est was one of the signatories of a letter sent to Merz on Friday by the leaders of the CDU branches in the state of Saxony. In the message, the chancellor's fellow party members called on him to give a "new start" to the CDU in order to regain voters' trust in this party after its failure in the regional elections in Saxony-Anhalt.

Est himself spoke in favor of carrying out large-scale economic reforms in Germany under the code name "Agenda 2030", including cheaper energy, lower taxes and reduction of bureaucracy, as well as investments in infrastructure and technology.

“Whether Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz has the strength for this new beginning is something he must decide for himself... But the CDU chancellor must give the country guidelines and concretely solve existing problems,” Est said in an interview with the Handelsblatt newspaper.

The politician pointed out that the current policy of “small steps” pursued by Merz only causes disappointment among the Germans. In this regard, he called for giving “new impetus and more substance” to the activities of the German Cabinet and the CDU itself.

“The current situation is urgent... For this reason, we need to convene a conference of branch chairmen (CDU - ed.) as soon as possible and clarify the situation,” he said.

The right-wing opposition party Alternative for Germany (AfD), according to preliminary data, won with 43.8% of the vote in the parliamentary elections in Saxony-Anhalt. She advocates tightening migration policy and protecting traditional values.
