[Reporter Liao Xueru/Reporting from Hsinchu] A Japanese couple came to Taiwan. The wife was pregnant at an advanced age and had gestational diabetes. She needed to continuously track her blood sugar control and fetal status during pregnancy. The International Medical Center of National Taiwan University Branch in Hsinchu assisted them in everything from prenatal check-ups, interdisciplinary diagnosis and treatment, delivery to newborn care. They accompanied them all the way to welcome a new life in a foreign land, demonstrating the spirit of language barrier-free and medical care without borders.
Hsinchu National Taiwan University Branch stated that since the establishment of the International Medical Center in 2022, it is the first international family to complete one-stop integrated care of "prenatal check-up-delivery-postpartum-athletic tracking". Japanese Mrs. T is pregnant at an advanced age and complicated with gestational diabetes. The hospital arranged for Dr. Lin Guanting of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Dr. Colin Yifu of the Metabolic Endocrinology Department to take care of her. They also combined Japanese interpretation services to help the medical team communicate smoothly with the patient and their families, reducing the anxiety and stress of seeking medical treatment in other places.
The delivery process is situation-aware in the Ledeer maternity room in the hospital. Through the spatial design that integrates maternity, delivery and initial postpartum care, the continuity and comfort of care are improved. After the newborn is born, the medical team will conduct routine observation and screening. During this period, if the newborn is found to have symptoms of jaundice, he will be immediately hospitalized for phototherapy and continuous monitoring.
During the hospitalization, the newborn was cared for by Dr. Lu Yixuan of the Department of Pediatrics. After treatment, the jaundice index returned to normal and he was discharged successfully and healthily. Although the language was different, the medical team provided warm companionship and professional care. Mrs. T specially expressed her gratitude with a handwritten card when she was discharged. In the next six months, Mrs. T continued to return to the hospital for postpartum recovery and blood sugar tracking. The newborn also completed vaccinations and follow-up at the pediatric outpatient clinic according to the schedule.
Huang Songxi, International Director of the International Medical Center of the National Taiwan University Branch in Hsinchu, said that the International Medical Center focuses on interdisciplinary integration and multilingual support to provide outpatient coordination, language assistance and medical process integration services that foreigners need for medical treatment in Taiwan.
