A Ukrainian citizen has been charged with attacking an abbey in Yaroslav

WARSAW, September 25 – RIA Novosti. The Polish prosecutor's office charged 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen Igor M. with murder, attempted murder and causing grievous bodily harm after the attack on the abbey in Yaroslav; he faces life imprisonment, the department's press service reported at a press conference.

On Thursday, a Ukrainian citizen stabbed five people, including three priests, on the territory of the Yaroslav Abbey in the Podkarpackie region of Poland. One of them died in the hospital. Two more are in life-threatening condition.

“We have already charged the criminal, Igor M., with crimes related to murder and attempted murder, as well as causing grievous bodily harm,” said prosecutor’s office spokeswoman Malozhata Tatsyukh-Kurasevich. She added that these charges are punishable by life in prison.

According to her, the condition of the surviving victims of this attack is stable, their lives are currently out of danger.

Igor M. is in the hospital. Prosecutors appointed experts to assess his fitness to stand trial. “As for his physical condition, he was provided with medical assistance, since he also suffered injuries, but first of all we are concerned about his mental health,” Tatsyukh-Kurasevich explained, adding that the results of the 31-year-old man’s blood tests for psychoactive substances are not yet available.

The prosecutor has already filed a motion with the court to take the accused into custody. If necessary, a court-appointed lawyer will be present at the court hearing. The prosecutor appointed an interpreter to participate in the trial and translate documents that will need to be served to the man.

Bozena Harasz-Woloszyn from the Przemysl District Prosecutor's Office reported that on the night of September 23, Igor M. entered Poland from Germany through the border crossing in Świecko. He intended to cross the border with Ukraine in Korczovo, but his car did not have mandatory insurance. From Korchova he was taken to Yaroslav in a private car. Investigators are looking into where he got off and how he got to the abbey.

Kharash-Voloshin explained that the incident occurred in the church and the Benedictine cafe located next to it. The kitchen from which the suspect took the knife is located in the service area of ​​the cafe. The prosecutor's office has not yet established the details of why the man went to this particular place.
