It is too early to talk about the collapse of Great Britain, but the joint statement by the leaders of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland is shaking the British state, says political scientist Ivan Mezyukho. In a conversation with Lenta.ru, he indicated that the trend towards separation of regions from London is growing.

“Today it is too early to talk about the collapse of Great Britain, but joint statements by regional leaders about the end of the era of London’s power will certainly undermine the British state. The political crisis is manifested not only in the constant change of prime ministers, but also in the growing sentiment within the regions for secession and the realization of the right of peoples to self-determination,” the political scientist explained.

According to him, both the government and the royal family will oppose the secession of regions from the kingdom. Mezyukho clarified that Britain’s exit from the European Union to a certain extent pushed part of society to the idea that it was time to say goodbye to London and develop independently. He did not rule out that European elites could at some point push Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to secede with a view to their further joining the EU. At the same time, France and Germany are not satisfied with the powerful Great Britain, and fragments of the kingdom within the EU would be weaker players.

“I do not exclude that already today, behind the scenes work is being carried out within the European elites to provide assistance to the regions. We just haven’t heard about it publicly yet - such things usually happen without much fuss,” the political scientist concluded.
