King Harald V of Norway dies at age 89; details of his funeral are revealed

King Harald V of Norway died last Friday at the age of 89 and, after a few days in which Norwegians mourned his loss at events throughout the country, the details of his funeral have already been revealed. It will be next September 9 in Oslo Cathedral, in a ceremony officiated by the presiding bishop of the Church of Norway, Olav Fykse Tveit, after which he will receive burial in the Akershus fortress.

What will the funeral of Harald V of Norway be like?

As reported this Sunday by the Royal Family, the ceremony will begin at 1:00 p.m. in Oslo Cathedral, the same place where the funeral of King Olav, Harald's father, also took place in January 1991, the NTB agency recalled.

The day of the funeral will begin with a private ceremony in the chapel of the Royal Palace for the closest relatives. Next, the main portal of the castle will open and a funeral salvo of 21 shots will ring out from the Akershus fortress.

What will the transfer of the coffin through the streets of Oslo be like?

The king's coffin will be carried in a large procession from the Royal Palace to Oslo Cathedral in which family members, personalities from Norwegian public life and numerous national and foreign guests will participate.

After the ceremony in the cathedral, there will be another, much smaller procession that will accompany the coffin to the chapel of the Akershus fortress, where a private ceremony will be held, intended mainly for the family, European royal houses and a few representatives of official Norwegian institutions.

Where will the late King Harald be buried?

The crypt beneath the Akershus Fortress Church will be Harald's final resting place.

After the funeral, a motorcade with the royal family and the rest of the guests will return to the Royal Palace, from whose balcony the new king, Haakon VIII, and his family will greet the people.

A reception will follow for representatives of the Norwegian Government, foreign guests, relatives and other funeral guests.

Can you visit the coffin before the burial?

Starting next Tuesday, citizens will be able to see King Harald's coffin in the chapel of the Royal Palace, where it will be transferred on Monday at 4:00 p.m. (2:00 p.m. GMT) from the Red Room, where it had been installed last Friday afternoon, as reported this Sunday by the Royal Family.
