A firefighter and an operator die in a fire in a mechanical workshop in Calatorao

A firefighter from the Zaragoza Provincial Council and an operator died this Tuesday afternoon as a result of an urban fire in Calatorao (Zaragoza), as reported by the provincial institution. The fire broke out in a local mechanical workshop and caused thick black smoke that can be seen from a distance. The president of the Zaragoza Provincial Council, Juan Antonio Sánchez Quero, traveled to the scene of the events.

The fire at the workshop, located in the urban area of this town, has created scenes of panic among the residents of the area and within a few minutes a municipal order has been issued: "Due to the high toxicity of the smoke generated, please calmly evacuate the nearby streets and surroundings of the affected area. Do not approach the scene of the event under any circumstances so as not to hinder the work of the emergency teams or expose yourself to harmful gases. Nearby homes must hermetically close doors and windows, as well as turning off any ventilation or air conditioning system.

The two deceased people died when they were trapped by a wall that collapsed inside the ship. As explained in statements to the media at the scene of the incident, the chief fire inspector of the Provincial Council of Zaragoza, Raúl Aguilar, at 2:22 p.m. they received notification of a fire in Talleres Salanova, after which they mobilized to the La Almunia and Cariñena parks and, later, when it was seen that the fire was of "quite a magnitude" and with a lot of thermal load, the fire park was also mobilized. According to Aguilar's story, when the firefighters arrived at the scene, they found that there was a person at risk inside the workshop and they went in to rescue him. During the rescue, the wall collapsed, trapping the firefighter and the company worker, while the other firefighters managed to get to safety. Aguilar regretted that a fire that occurs "more or less commonly" has ended in a tragedy.

On the other hand, the adjacent and nearby houses continue to be evacuated and the extinguishing operation continues to cool the area, since the interior of the workshop and all its contents are "completely burned."
