Fantasy Football Week 5 trades: Buy Ladd McConkey, sell high on Derrick Henry and everything in between

Quick Look

  • Week 5 marks the start of NFL bye weeks, creating fantasy football trading opportunities where strong teams target weak ones for players on bye.
  • Injured players like Ladd McConkey, who has underlying strong metrics despite poor recent production, are ideal buy-low targets, while selling high on players like Derrick Henry from struggling teams can yield wins this week.

AI-generated summary

Why It Matters

Week 5 of the NFL season marks the beginning of the bye week period, when teams do not play games, affecting fantasy football lineups as players on bye score zero points.

Font size

Week 5 marks the beginning of the bye week season, with the Chiefs and the Panthers taking the week off. This introduces a new aspect of Fantasy Football trading: good teams targeting bad teams with players on bye. The truth is, a 0-4 or 1-3 team cannot be as picky when it comes to replacing guys who won't score any points for them in Week 5. And, of course, good teams will find replacing a zero much more palatable. The way I presented this may make you think I'm framing the bad teams as the victims here. That may be true, but it doesn't have to be. In leagues where half the teams make the playoffs, this game is as much about survival as anything.

So if you are the team with a bad record, you should definitely consider selling your players on bye to get a win this week. The same goes for injured players. It just so happens that an injured guy is my favorite buy this week. At the same time, if you are sitting at 3-1 or better, go scour those cellar dweller rosters and see if you can make your team better for the stretch run.

Buy Ladd McConkey

McConkey sustained a chest injury earlier in the year and is now expected to miss time due to a foot injury. He was drafted in the first four rounds of almost all drafts and hasn't helped his manager much at all. In other words, there's a chance they are approaching desperation mode. If you can afford to wait for him to get healthy, there are promising signs in the underlying data. He's still averaging 2.13 yards per route run and 10.76 yards per target despite playing most of the year at less than 100%. Those are both better than his career averages. Also, the other receivers have not stepped up in his absence, so once McConkey is healthy, his target share could truly explode. The Chargers have a Week 7 bye, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if McConkey is a top 20 receiver from Week 8 on.

Sell Derrick Henry

Why Dana Altman followed Bruce Pearl, Tony Bennett's footsteps with sudden retirement on eve of 2026-27 season

Oregon men's basketball head coach Dana Altman retired effective immediately on Wednesday, less than 24 hours before he was scheduled to speak at Big Ten Media Days. His retirement follows a pattern of veteran coaches stepping down just before season openers, including Tony Bennett in 2024 and Bruce Pearl in 2025. Altman cited frustration with NIL, the transfer portal, and legal challenges stemming from the NCAA's new eligibility model. He had delegated portal negotiations to assistant Tony Stubblefield, who is now interim head coach. The timing of Altman's decision locks current players into the roster for 31 days due to NCAA transfer rules. Oregon had over $12 million available for basketball roster building, though less than Big Ten peers like Michigan and Indiana. Altman finishes his career with 792 wins, eight shy of 800, and a 17-9 NCAA Tournament record at Oregon. The Ducks' projected starting lineup features multiple transfers, including Fred Payne, Jasper Johnson, Tyrone Riley IV, Dwayne Aristode, and Sean Stewart.

The Baltimore Ravens traded a 2027 fifth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles for Pro Bowl center Cam Jurgens and a 2027 seventh-round pick, addressing their offensive line crisis after losing three centers to injury. Jurgens, who signed a $68 million extension last offseason, will return to his natural center position in Baltimore after struggling at guard this season.
