FC Augsburg missed out on the league lead with a 2-2 draw against Bayer Leverkusen

The surprise team from FC Augsburg missed the third coup of the young season and lost their lead in the Bundesliga with a draw against Bayer Leverkusen. The Swabians separated from the Europa League starters 2-2 (0-1) - and only because of a goal conceded shortly before the end by Patrik Schick.

Thanks to a brace from Michael Gregoritsch in the 50th and 55th minutes, FCA was very close to the next surprise. The Austrian turned the game against dominant Leverkusen on its head and became the record goalscorer in FCA Bundesliga history.

Christian Kofane took the lead for Bayer (18th) - substitute Schick made the final score with a backheel in the 89th minute. At least the Werkself avoided the second severe away setback of this season after the 2:3 at the start of the season in Elversberg.

Leverkusen largely dominant

Before kick-off, Augsburg coach Manuel Baum was given a certificate during a TV interview with the standings in the table after the second matchday: For the first time in their history, the Swabians ranked in place in the Bundesliga.

It was clear to the Augsburg team that Leverkusen would be the first real tough test of the season. And as expected, it was not the leaders but the Werkself who initially dominated the action in front of 29,745 spectators. Coach Carles Martinez's guests ran the ball well, and Bayer's quick passing game repeatedly posed problems for FCA.

Returnee Moussa Diaby squandered the lead in his starting eleven debut (5th), Ibrahim Maza's shot was blocked (9th) - then Kofane made it 1-0. The center forward was given preference over Schick for the first time and was then sent steeply by Edmond Tapsoba. With a physical illusion, the national player from Cameroon allowed his opponent Chrislain Matsima to step out and confidently slotted in to score the opening goal.

Gregoritsch is now FCA's record goalscorer

Because Bayer missed further scoring opportunities, the score was only 1-0 at the break. This should initially take revenge for the guests - similar to the previous week in Frankfurt, Augsburg turned the game around within a few minutes. First, Gregoritsch poked the ball past keeper Mark Flekken after a strong through pass from Hennes Behrens. Just moments later, the Austrian headed in completely alone from a corner to make it 2-1.

The national player and World Cup participant scored his goals 37 and 38 in FCA uniform - making him the club's record goalscorer and replacing Alfred Finnbogason (37). Augsburg's joy was interrupted by Maza's supposed equalizer from Leverkusen (60'), but according to VAR analysis it was disallowed due to a previous foul.

Leverkusen now pushed vehemently for the 2-2 and at times restricted the home team in their penalty area. Schick ensured the draw by extending a shot from substitute Malik Tillmann into the goal.
