The 3-year-old son of Kamyla Scarlet Fernandes Cristaldo, victim of feminicide in Campo Grande, will receive a pension from the National Social Security Institute (INSS) until he turns 21. The benefit was guaranteed following a request made by students at the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS).
The case was analyzed by the Support Center for Victims of Violent Crimes and Infractional Acts (Navit), an initiative carried out in partnership with the Public Ministry of Mato Grosso do Sul (MPMS).
According to UFMS Law professor Aurélio Briltes, the cases reach the center and are analyzed by the students, under the guidance of the team, so that the necessary applications can be made to the INSS.
“All these cases are sent to us and, together with the students, we analyze and make requests to the INSS”, he explains.
In Kamyla's case, the group had to file a lawsuit against the INSS to obtain the granting of a special pension for children and dependents of victims of feminicide.
“It is a new benefit, now from 2025. And it was the first benefit granted via court in the states of Mato Grosso do Sul and São Paulo, as an emergency measure”, says Aurélio.
The benefit was guaranteed by the Special Federal Civil Court of Campo Grande and is in the implementation phase.
According to the professor, the pension will be important to guarantee the survival of Kamyla's son and family, who live in a situation of social vulnerability.
“After the loss of a loved one, several demands arise, new questions arise, and this benefit meets the economic and assistance issues of survival and food”, he states.
Special pension
In May 2026, the INSS published an ordinance regulating the granting of special pensions to children and dependents of women victims of feminicide. The benefit is worth one minimum wage.
According to the rule, those under 18 years of age whose per capita family income is equal to or less than a quarter of the minimum wage are entitled to the pension.
In addition to biological children, stepchildren, minors under guardianship and wards who prove economic dependence on the victim can receive the benefit. The ordinance also provides for the right for minors hosted by the State.
Feminicide trial
Matheus Henrique de Oliveira Domingos, aged 24, was sentenced this Friday (2), in Campo Grande, to 17 years in prison for the feminicide of Kamyla Scarlet Fernandes Cristaldo, aged 28.
Kamyla was shot in the neck in September 2024, in the Columbia neighborhood, in the north of the capital. She was friends with Matheus' then-girlfriend, and the two lived together.
The conviction recognized the qualifications of a bad motive and the use of a resource that made the victim's defense difficult. Matheus was also acquitted of the charge of illegal possession of a firearm due to a lack of sufficient evidence for conviction.
The trial was presided over by judge Aluizio Pereira dos Santos, from the 2nd Court of the Campo Grande Jury Court.
At the opening of the proceedings, the judge showed the jurors a video with information about the dynamics and rules of the trial.
During the interrogation, Matheus denied committing the crime, as he had done during the investigations. He presented an alibi and stated that he was in the interior of São Paulo at the time of the shooting.
The Public Defender's Office, responsible for the defendant's defense, requested that Matheus be dismissed, on the grounds that there was not enough evidence to submit him to trial by the Jury Court.
The defense even appealed the decision that took the case to a popular jury, but the request was denied by the Court. According to the decisions of the case, there was sufficient evidence of authorship, based on witness statements, security camera images and expert reports.
Still according to the process, before dying, Kamyla would have pointed out Matheus as the person responsible for the shooting.
Victim was hospitalized for three months
According to the complaint, Kamyla was shot twice in the neck when she was leaving home to get a ride-hailing car. The crime occurred in September 2024, in the Columbia neighborhood.
As stated in the case, the crime was motivated by jealousy over the friendship between Kamyla and Matheus' then-girlfriend.
After the shots, Kamyla was rescued and remained hospitalized for around three months at Santa Casa de Campo Grande, but did not survive her injuries.
After the crime, the suspect fled and was arrested more than a year later.
