Friedrich Merz: Ukraine's Security is Europe's Security

Friedrich Merz said at the joint press conference held after the High Level European Arctic Summit in Rovaniemi, Finland, that the security and freedom of Europe is directly linked to the outcome of the war in Ukraine.

“If Russia succeeds, it will have unpredictable and unprecedented consequences for all of us, including Germany,” Merz said. he said.

For this reason, the German Prime Minister emphasized that he took a very determined and clear stance and that he had no intention of stepping back even a centimeter.

Merz also noted that it is a "historical duty" to provide all possible support to Ukraine to preserve peace and freedom in Europe.

Arguing that Russia is not only waging war against Ukraine, Merz stated that Moscow is also organizing hybrid attacks and influence operations against European countries.

On a question about the strengthening of opposition in European countries against the support given to Ukraine, Merz underlined that the war has entered a critical phase.

"Most likely, the most decisive moments in defending the freedom and peace of our continent await us, perhaps weeks or months," the German Chancellor said. he said.

Stating that he was aware of the criticisms regarding the continuation of military and financial support to Ukraine, Merz stated that the discussions in question were carried out not only in Germany but also throughout the European Union.

Despite this, Merz argued that continuing support for Ukraine was in the security interest not only of Kiev but also of Europe.

“I will do everything I can to continue our support and convince people that it is in our interest.” Merz said that European governments should maintain their determination until the war is over.
