Insgesamt beliefen sich die direkten Kosten auf 528,5 Milliarden Euro, was einem Anstieg von 7,6 Prozent zum Vorjahr entspricht, wie das Statistische Bundesamt am Donnerstag mitteilte. Rechnerisch entfielen damit auf jeden Einwohner Kosten von 6330 Euro. In den Zahlen sind Ausgaben für medizinische Behandlungen, Pflege, Prävention und Rehabilitation enthalten, nicht jedoch indirekte Folgen wie Arbeitsausfälle.

Besonders große Unterschiede zeigen sich zwischen den Geschlechtern. Die Pro-Kopf-Kosten für Frauen lagen mit 6960 Euro um 22,5 Prozent höher als für Männer mit 5680 Euro. Die Statistiker führen dies vor allem auf die höhere Lebenserwartung von Frauen und den damit verbundenen größeren Anteil an älteren und hochbetagten Menschen zurück. Zudem fallen Kosten im Zusammenhang mit Schwangerschaft und Geburt an. Die teuersten Krankheitsbilder unterscheiden sich ebenfalls: Bei Frauen verursachten psychische und Verhaltensstörungen wie Demenz die höchsten Kosten, bei Männern waren es Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen.

Ein entscheidender Kostentreiber ist das Lebensalter. Mehr als die Hälfte der gesamten Krankheitskosten von 284,3 Milliarden Euro entfiel auf die Altersgruppe der über 65-Jährigen. Während die Kosten für 15- bis 29-Jährige bei durchschnittlich 2390 Euro lagen, stiegen sie für Menschen über 85 Jahre auf 30.150 Euro pro Person.

Insgesamt verursachten Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen mit 69,4 Milliarden Euro die höchsten Kosten, dicht gefolgt von psychischen und Verhaltensstörungen mit 68,7 Milliarden Euro. Insgesamt entfiel mehr als die Hälfte der Kosten auf fünf große Krankheitsgruppen. Neben den bereits genannten Herz-Kreislauf-Leiden und psychischen Störungen zählten dazu Krankheiten des Muskel-Skelett-Systems, des Verdauungssystems sowie Neubildungen wie Krebs. Der Anteil dieser fünf Bereiche an den Gesamtkosten ist den Statistikern zufolge seit dem Jahr 2015 weitgehend stabil.
