Large demonstration for social cohesion in Berlin

An alliance of almost 100 organizations, initiatives and unions demonstrated for social cohesion in Berlin on Saturday, almost a week before the election for the House of Representatives. The organizers of the so-called star demonstration expect 30,000 participants.

Under the heading “Time for something to happen,” seven demonstrations will march in a star shape through the capital from around 11:30 a.m. to the Red City Hall, where a final rally will take place at 4 p.m. The organizations include the climate protection movement Fridays for Future, “Grandmas Against the Right”, the Verdi trade union and the ADFC Berlin.

The police planned to deploy 1,800 people to the demonstration on Friday. However, the number could change on the day of the operation itself, it was said. The demo trains start at Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, Potsdamer Platz, Moritzplatz and at the Landsberger Allee S-Bahn station, among others.

According to the traffic information center (VIZ), significant traffic restrictions are to be expected throughout the entire city center of Berlin throughout Saturday afternoon. The VIZ strongly recommends using public transport. The exact routes of the demo trains can be found on the organizer's website.

According to their own statements, the participants in the star demonstration are demonstrating for climate protection, social justice, for the mobility transition, against racism, for queer feminism and for the protection of democracy. They therefore want to “set an example against division and for a solidarity-based, cosmopolitan city”.
