Women's bodies found repeatedly in South Africa raise concern

The bodies of women found one after another in South Africa are increasing concern in the country.

Police announced that another woman's body was found in the Ekurhuleni Municipality, east of Johannesburg. Thus, the number of female corpses found in the region since July increased to nine.

Gauteng Police Acting Commissioner Fred Kekana said the body of the woman, believed to be around 30 years old, was found near a construction site in the Dawn Park area.

According to initial investigations, it was stated that the woman had a stab wound on her body and her throat may have been cut. It was announced that the exact cause of death will be determined after a forensic examination.

Police consider that the woman may have been killed elsewhere and left in the area where her body was found.

In the last two months, women's bodies have been found in different areas such as Kempton Park, Pomona, Clayville, Olifantsfontein, Rhodesfield, KwaThema and Dawn Park.

According to the police, the fact that some of the victims were found naked or partially naked and that some of the bodies had similar injuries increased suspicions that the cases may be related.

However, at this stage, the authorities have not been able to determine whether the murders were committed by a single person, a group, or independent perpetrators.

THE POSSIBILITY OF A “SERIAL KILLER” IS BEING INVESTIGATED

Following the events, allegations were raised in the public that a serial killer might be active.

Police neither confirmed nor completely ruled out this possibility. A comprehensive investigation is being carried out, involving teams from different areas of expertise, to identify possible links between the cases.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said investigators were making progress in some cases and several key leads were being followed, but did not share details of the investigation.

Police announced that a reward of 400 thousand South African rand has been offered for people who provide information that will help elucidate the murders and capture the suspects.

Authorities asked the public to report suspicious situations and not to share unverified information on social media that could negatively affect the investigation.

Police also stated that the dissemination of images of dead bodies on social media increases the pain of families, causes fear in society and may encourage similar crimes.

VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IS ON THE AGENDA AGAIN

The fact that women were found dead one after another brought the issue of femicide and gender-based violence in South Africa back to the country's agenda.

While South Africa is among the countries with high murder rates in the world, violence against women has long been considered one of the country's most serious social problems.

Missing In Southern Africa, an organization that supports the families of missing people, also called for people suspected of missing to be reported to the police without delay.

The organization reminded that there is no need to wait a certain period of time to file a missing persons report and asked families to immediately contact the authorities in suspicious cases.
