Haaland reached the milestone of 300 goals at club level
Anh Erling Haaland scored his 300th goal at the club level, with the only goal helping Man City win 1-0 against Coventry City in the third round of the Premier League.
All attention at Etihad Stadium on September 5 initially focused on Enzo Fernandez - a record contract worth 169 million USD transferred from Chelsea on the last day of the 2026 summer transfer period. The Argentine midfielder was placed on the reserve by coach Enzo Maresca, but Nico O'Reilly's injury during the warm-up helped him soon have the opportunity to make his debut.
Man City is of course rated higher than Coventry - the newly promoted club lost both first rounds, 0-3 to Arsenal and 0-1 to Hull City. Coach Frank Lampard made two changes to the starting lineup, with Caleb Yirenkyi and Loum Tchaouna starting to replace Ethan Pinnock and Frank Onyeka.
These adjustments helped Coventry enter the game proactively and continuously make the home defense wobble. In the 6th minute, Abdukodir Khusanov passed to Gianluigi Donnarumma, but the ball suddenly slipped under the Italian goalkeeper. Donnarumma was able to rush after him and narrowly saved him. Two minutes later, Taiwo Awoniyi cut off Antoine Semenyo's weak pass, accelerated to eliminate Ruben Dias but missed the post in a face-to-face position.
After a few frustrating minutes, Man City gradually regained control and increased the pressure. In the 23rd minute, receiving a pass from Fernandez, Rayan Cherki showed off his technique before kicking the ball against the post. But the home team did not have to regret for too long. In the 26th minute, Fernandez poked a slot behind the Coventry defense to let Semenyo escape. The Ghana striker crossed with one touch, creating an opportunity for Haaland to jump high and head past Carl Rushworth.
That was a moment that marked a special milestone in the Norwegian striker's career. Haaland reached the mark of 300 goals at the club level after 368 matches, including 156 goals for Man City, 86 for Dortmund, 29 for RB Salzburg and 20 for Molde. Haaland also scored his 20th headed goal in the Premier League since joining Man City at the beginning of the 2022-2023 season. No other player has achieved similar results in the same period of time. Behind Haaland is Ollie Watkins with 16 headed goals, Chris Wood with 13, and Casemiro and Virgil van Dijk both have 11 goals.
The goal came in the 26th minute, when Coventry was under suffocating pressure, and the situation became even more difficult after the break. Fernandez continued to receive the ball on the right wing, observed and then hung into the penalty area towards Haaland, but the ball did not get past the first defender. Cherki then had a very technical move, creating space before the shot was blocked.
Maresca wants the wingers to play more directly, taking advantage of the speed of Semenyo and rookie Iliman Ndiaye. This approach constantly forced Coventry's defense to struggle. Cherki also contributed to creating unpredictable situations, including a mischievous touch that helped Haaland escape. The Norwegian striker dribbled the ball and fell in the penalty area, but the referee did not give Man City a penalty. Haaland continued to score in the following situation but was unsuccessful.
On the other side of the front line, Coventry showed that they did not surrender easily. After Awoniyi's early miss, Jack Rudoni had a much better chance with a close-range header. Donnarumma had to fly all the way to the left to prevent the away team from equalizing. This situation shows that Coventry is completely capable of causing difficulties for Man City. But Lampard's team must regret not being able to take advantage of rare opportunities.
In the 75th minute, $110 million midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi replaced Fernandez and had his first match at Etihad Stadium. Maresca tasked the 18-year-old midfielder with helping stabilize the midfield when Man City's squad began to show signs of wobbles. Bouaddi responded with a calm performance, showing maturity beyond his years.
In the last minutes, Man City was under great pressure and repeatedly relied on Donnarumma's talent to preserve the victory. Haaland reached the 300-goal mark at club level, Fernandez impressed in his debut, but the struggling performance at the Etihad showed that Maresca still has many problems to solve.
Meanwhile, Coventry can be satisfied with their performance, only losing narrowly to Man City's stars. However, the 0-1 defeat means they still have not scored after the first three rounds of the Premier League. Coventry's thirst for goals in England's highest tournament has therefore continued to last, since Mustapha Hadji's goal on May 5, 2001.
