Interview with the president of Seibu HD about Shinagawa redevelopment, hotel rebuilding, and the future of labor shortages

Shinagawa Station (Minato-ku, Tokyo) is also the starting station for the Linear Chuo Shinkansen. Seibu Holdings is planning to redevelop and renovate the Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa and Shinagawa Prince Hotel in front of the station. Will the plan proceed smoothly amid rising construction costs and severe labor shortages? We asked President Ryuichiro Nishiyama.

--Due to the financial results announcement in May, the start date for the redevelopment of Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa was temporarily undecided.

"Due to the constraints of the general contractor's construction capacity, we announced that we would examine the start date of 2028. However, there was some doubt that it might be canceled. Therefore, in June, we announced once again that construction would start in 2030 and completion would be in 2035."

--What kind of vision do you envision for redevelopment?

"The city plan for New Takanawa was decided in December last year. We will make use of the original garden to create a complex with greenery, and create an area with hotels, international conference halls, and offices. The entire Shinagawa area will become a new gateway to Japan. As one of the largest landowners, we will work together with the community."

--Renovation work is also planned at the adjacent Shinagawa Prince Hotel.
