Man shoots dead at least 5 and injures 10 people in the main square of Krakow, Poland

A man shot at pedestrians this Saturday (7) in the tourist center of Krakow, in southern Poland, and killed five people. Around ten were injured, local police told AFP.

At around 3pm local time (11am in Brasília), a man arrived in a vehicle at the city's main square, which is very busy on weekends, and opened fire "randomly", according to a police spokesperson. An AFP journalist saw people lying on the ground, several emergency vehicles and armed police.

The motivations for the attack have not yet been clarified.

The attacker was shot by police and taken to hospital, according to a police officer. Authorities reported that several officers were among the injured.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk lamented a "tragic shooting attack". The president, Karol Nawrocki, said on X that he expected "full explanations about the circumstances of these dramatic events" and stressed that "the safety of Poles is an absolute priority."
