IKEA has confirmed to enter the second hall of Tainan Nanfang Shopping Center and is expected to open by the end of the year

[Reporter Wang Junzhong/Tainan Report] Tainan Mayor Huang Weizhe announced on Facebook today that the well-known Swedish furniture brand IKEA will set up shop in Nanfang Shopping Center in East District, making Tainan’s IKEA dream come true. Nanfang Shopping said in a low-key manner that everything is based on IKEA's statement, and it is not convenient for Nanfang to say more. However, it is understood that IKEA will occupy about 400 square meters of space on the first basement floor of Nanfang Shopping Hall 2, and hopes to open it before the end of this year.

IKEA has been negotiating with Nanfang Shopping Center for about a year last year about cooperation in store openings. Since the two parties have signed a confidentiality agreement, store openings must be made by IKEA. It is inconvenient for Nanfang Shopping Mall to explain relevant matters to the outside world.

Tainan East District Independent City Councilor Zeng Zhijie expressed her expectation and optimism that IKEA can come to the Nanfang Shopping Exhibition Store in Tainan East District. She admitted that IKEA's presence in Nanfang Shopping should have a certain impact on local traffic. In fact, Nanfang Shopping itself has special occasions such as anniversary celebrations. During scheduled events and holidays, the traffic volume is also heavy and will cause some congestion; but on weekdays, it is fine. She believes that IKEA's presence in Nanfang Shopping will make further planning for surrounding traffic diversion and parking space. She cannot prevent IKEA from coming to Tainan because of its impact on traffic.

East District Democratic Progressive Party City Councilor Cai Xiaowei also said that the presence of IKEA will not only help enhance Tainan's commercial functions and urban attractiveness, but will also drive the development of the East District and the surrounding Pingshi Camping Area. However, the accompanying growth in pedestrian and vehicle flows will inevitably put greater pressure on the existing transportation system. The city government should make supporting plans in advance to avoid traffic congestion problems in the future. The most urgent traffic improvement measure at this stage is to quickly promote the "Pingshi Road Connecting National Highway No. 1 Side Lane" project to establish a more direct connecting road system.
