The absence of dependable batter Jemimah Rodrigues is a significant blow, with Pratika Rawal added to the squad for the Asia Cup and Asian Games. Her inclusion, however, does not completely answer India’s requirement for a batter capable of taking charge in the middle overs and providing a sustained acceleration towards the end.
Batters at No. 3 and below will need to ensure that the momentum created by Mandhana and Shafali does not disappear. Against stronger opponents, India’s ability to maintain the scoring rate through the middle phase could prove decisive.
The spotlight will inevitably be on Harmanpreet, both as captain and batter, with questions continuing over her form and future in the shortest format. She produced when India needed her most in their crucial World Cup clash against Australia, but her inconsistency across the tournament remained one of the talking points of a campaign in which India struggled to match higher-ranked opponents.
The 2026 Asia Cup assumes added significance because it is followed by the Asian Games in Japan next month. With India expected to challenge for gold in both competitions, Harmanpreet’s leadership and batting contribution will be closely watched.
