Indian-Origin Woman Arrested in Canada for C$60,000 Rental Scam

An Indian-origin woman has been arrested in Canada after police uncovered a rental scam that left dozens of prospective tenants without homes and out of more than $60,000, CTV News reported. According to Peel Regional Police, the accused allegedly advertised rental properties, including basement apartments, on social media between May 2025 and February 2026. People who responded to the listings signed tenancy agreements and paid deposits covering the first and last month's rent. Police said the fraud came to light only when tenants arrived at the advertised addresses with their belongings, only to discover the properties were unavailable. In several cases, victims had already moved out of their previous homes before realising they had been deceived. Police have identified 17 cases linked to the alleged rental fraud, with total losses exceeding C$60,000. "None of the victims received the promised accommodations or had their money returned," Peel Regional Police said. Savreet Kaur, 27, of Brampton, was arrested on July 13. She faces 38 counts of fraud over C$5,000 and one count of obstructing police. The allegations have not been proven in court. She was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
