Iran-US war latest: Trump says Tehran is ‘finished’ after Swiss peace talks called off

Negotiations between the US and Iran in Switzerland were cancelled after clashes between Israel and Hezbollah - before a renewed ceasefire was announced in Lebanon

Donald Trump rushed to defend his record on Iran on Friday after Iran’s supreme leader claimed he had forced through an agreement to end the war out of “desperation”, amid a pile on of criticism over the deal from Trump’s base.

“We didn’t meet out of desperation, Iran did,” the US president wrote on Truth Social. “They are FINISHED! We’ll play out the 60 days. They get no money, not ten cents!”

The president listed off damage inflicted on Iran’s military and lashed out at those doubting his effectiveness as “stupid”. Trump has faced criticism at home since unveiling an interim deal to end the war that includes an Iran recovery fund and sanctions relief.

That deal came under new pressure on Friday as anticipated talks between the US and Iran in Switzerland were abruptly called off, clouding prospects for a lasting truce as a major escalation in Lebanon threatened the tenuous agreement to end the war.

Insiders told the Financial Times that Iran did not send a delegation following a wave of deadly airstrikes across southern Lebanon overnight, before Israel and Hezbollah suddenly renewed their ceasefire late on Friday afternoon.

It comes as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces pressure to continue his war against Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The Washington Post spoke to US officials who say a new intelligence report concludes that ahead of national elections this autumn, Mr Netanyahu’s political survival is linked to showing his domestic audience that he will not withdraw troops from Lebanon.

Officials also said the report shows Israel’s unhappiness with the US-Iran deal because it undermines their wider objective of pressure on Tehran.

American ⁠authorities require them to enter within 24 hours ​of ⁠a match and leave the same day, leading team coach Amir Ghalenoei to say Iran were the "most oppressed" team in the tournament.

"The Football Federation ⁠of Iran believes these restrictions are inconsistent with the principles of providing equal ​conditions ⁠for participating teams and may affect ‌their technical preparation," the federation said in a statement on Friday announcing its protest to FIFA. FIFA did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment. Ghalenoei ‌said the disruption had prejudiced Iran in Monday's ‌2-2 draw with New Zealand.

"Under the coaching staff's plan, the national team needed to travel to the host city two days before each match in order to achieve optimal technical and physical condition, and ⁠then return to their base the day after the match," the federation said.

"However, for the opening match against New Zealand, this request was not approved."

The US Department of Homeland Security said the measures were safety precautions agreed with Iran, who face Belgium on June 21 in Los Angeles and will conclude their Group G fixtures against Egypt on June 27 in Seattle.

"The team will be allowed to come in ‌match day minus one, so the day before the match. They'll be ​asked to leave the day that the match wraps up, so the ‌evening of the match," a department ⁠spokesperson said in response to an email query from Reuters.

"Again, the President ⁠wants to make sure that we're talking about what actually happens on the pitch. A lot of that ‌is making sure that ​things are safe and secure, not just ‌around the stadiums, but around base ​camps and training sites."

Iraq raises southern oil output after Strait of Hormuz reopens

Iraq has increased crude oil production from its southern ⁠fields by 250,000 barrels per day to around 1.75 million barrels per ⁠day ​as more ⁠tankers load crude from the country's ⁠ports, Iraqi oil ​officials ⁠told Reuters on ‌Friday.

Iran's foreign minister hits back at Ben-Gvir 'all of Lebanon must burn' comments

Israel’s foreign minister has hit out at comments made by Israel’s national security minister.

Itamar Ben-Gvir said on Friday that “all of Lebanon must burn” after the Israeli military said its soldiers were killed in an incident in Lebanon overnight, without giving further details.

“For every tear of an Israeli mother, a thousand Lebanese mothers must weep. All of Lebanon must burn!” he wrote on social media, adding: “In the Middle East, you don’t win with measured responses and restraint - you need to go beserk. To obliterate.”

Responding on X, Abbas Araghchi wrote: “This is not a rant by a random genocidal lunatic. It's a public post by the national security minister of the Israeli regime.”

Iran says it plans meeting with US officials in coming days after postponing Friday talks

A planned meeting between Iranian and US officials in ⁠Switzerland on Friday has been postponed, with arrangements underway for ⁠talks ​in ⁠the coming days, Iran's foreign ministry ⁠said on Friday.

The ​ministry ⁠said the ‌meeting was no longer urgent because ‌a memorandum of understanding ‌on ending the war had ⁠already been signed digitally between the two sides.
