Harsh Reaction from Israel to Britain's Sanction Decision

Reacting to the decision, Israeli President Ishak Herzog, in his speech at an event in Jerusalem, argued that the sanctions were a "serious error of judgement" and said that Britain was "on the wrong side of history".

Claiming that the sanctions constitute an intervention in the elections at the end of October, Herzog said, "The solution is not sanctions, but dialogue."

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich called for the deportation of the British Ambassador to Tel Aviv.

Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir had previously been on the sanctions list of some countries, including the UK.

The Israeli press reported that the Tel Aviv administration may deport the British representatives at the Kiryat Gat Civil-Military Coordination Center, where the peace plan for the Gaza Strip is carried out, in retaliation.

Britain represents the third largest military power at headquarters, after the United States and Israel.

British Work and Pensions Minister Pat McFadden stated that the increase in settlement activities necessitates sanctions, but Israel will remain an important trading partner.

The annual bilateral trade volume of 6 billion pounds (approximately $8.12 billion) is expected to be minimally affected by this decision.

Agricultural products such as fresh fruits, vegetables and wine coming from the settlements have a very small share in Israel's total trade. Diplomats state that monitoring the import ban may create technical difficulties due to products of unknown origin.

United Nations bodies and many states, including Britain, consider settlements in the West Bank illegal and consider the region as military-occupied territory.

The Israeli administration, on the other hand, argues that the region is not under occupation but "disputed". The E1 settlement project, which is at the center of the reactions, risks obstructing the territorial integrity of an independent Palestinian state by dividing the West Bank into north and south.
