Car flooded in Istanbul: 2 missing people are sought

An investigation has been launched to find 2 people who were swept away by flood waters during the heavy downpour in Pendik, Istanbul. The downpour, which started in the evening and increased in intensity at night, turned into a flood in Göçbeyli District. Underwater Search and Rescue (SAK), AKUT, AFAD, fire brigade and gendarmerie teams were dispatched to the specified address upon the report that two of the 3 people who were lost in the water with a car with license plate 34 HER 50 as a result of the overflow of the Büyük Stream (Göçbeyli Stream), which passes through the neighborhood and whose flow rate increased due to the downpour, were lost.

One of the people in the car was M.D.E. While he escaped with his own means, D.A. with F.D. got caught up in the current. M.D.E. was moved to a safe area with the help of people around him. He was taken to hospital by ambulance.

The teams searched three different places at the same time on the possibility that the car and the other 2 people were swept away by the current. Since the place where the incident occurred was on the Istanbul-Kocaeli provincial border, Kocaeli Gebze Municipality Search and Rescue (GEAK) and Çayırova Municipality Search and Rescue (ÇAK) teams were also dispatched to the region.

"THE SURVIVOR SAID HE CAME OUT OF THE WATER BY HOLDING ON TO THE BRANCH"

Ahmet Özyurt, headman of Kadıllı District of Gebze district, told journalists that the incident took place between Kadıllı District and Göçbeyli District and that the teams continued the searches despite the adverse weather conditions.

Stating that the injured survivor is in good condition, Özyurt said:

"What the person who was slightly injured in the incident told us is that they got out by breaking the window about 100 or 150 meters after being dragged in the water with the car. The survivor said that he got out of the water by holding on to the branch. The flow of the stream is very high. The location of the incident is exactly the border of the two cities. The waters of the stream go to Ömerli Dam. The teams brought a drone and searched, but there is no development so far."
